The Vampire of Melrose Abbey Print E-mail

This story begins with a priest who had neglected his holy vows, and instead devoted his days to frivolous activities. After his death, he was reported to have risen from his grave and attempted to enter the monastery. Having failed to enter, he began wandering throughout the countryside. He found his way to the house of a lady, whom he had once been chaplain to. After several visits, the lady reported the incidents to the other priests at the monastery.

Several priests set up a watch at the graveyard where the priest had been buried. One priest kept the watch as the others rested by a fire. On his watch he saw the priest rise from his grave. The dead priest approached him and he hit him with an axe and forced him back into his grave. The earth opened up and closed over the grave and looked as if nothing had been disturbed.

The next day the grave was opened. Within was the corpse of the priest. The corpse had the axe wound that was inflicted the night before and the coffin was filled with blood. The body was then burnt and the ashes scattered.
